A crop input product database is a collection of products within specific crop input categories and geographies. A crop input database contains all of the labels and relevant product documents (such as SDS, 2ee, and others), but also, all relevant underlying data that goes into those labels and documents. The information is then organized into a structured data model that enables users to search, compare, analyze, and integrate product information efficiently.

There are two major ways that Compass makes its crop input database available: through flat CSV files as well as APIs. The majority of our users access the crop input database through our API. But what exactly is an API? An Application Programming Interface (API) allows independent software systems to share data programmatically.
Compass provides a crop input API with two components: the Data API and the Checking API, both designed for integration into existing AgTech platforms. The Data API provides access to standardized agricultural product data, including labels, crops, pests, ingredients, regulatory information, and related metadata. The Checking API builds on that data by evaluating proposed pesticide applications against label requirements, regulations, and business rules to support compliant recommendation writing. Together, they serve as a complete recommendation engine; the Data API is the backbone while the Checking API applies intelligence against real-world application scenarios.

Pesticide Application Compliance “Checking” combines the power of a standardized database and intelligence, to enable accurate and compliant recommendations for product use. The checking process is critical for compliant use of pesticides in different ways and markets, and pesticide use is facilitated often by licensed PCAs, agronomists, applicators, and others.
Compass enables this checking process with our API, combined with other powerful tools that exist through our partners, such as farm management information systems (FMIS). To meet the needs of different markets, we have two levels of checking: Basic and Advanced. Basic checking targets the row crop market, while Advanced checking targets the specialty crop market.
Pesticide label compliance means following all of the instructions and requirements on a pesticide's label when using the product. The label tells you how to use the pesticide safely, effectively, and legally. This includes using the product only on the approved crops and for the pests listed on the label. It also means following the specified application rates, timing, application methods, personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, restricted-entry intervals (REIs), pre-harvest intervals (PHIs), environmental precautions, and any instructions for storage and disposal.
Because pesticide labels are legally enforceable, users must follow both the label directions and any applicable federal, state, or local regulations. Simply put, “the label is the law.”
Basic Checking is a service designed to support guardrail compliance checks and research for downstream decision-making. It evaluates proposed product use information against regulatory and label-based constraints and returns structured results based on the level of detail provided in the request.

The Endangered Species Act (ESA) requires federal agencies, including the EPA, to ensure that pesticide registrations and uses do not jeopardize threatened or endangered species or destroy their designated critical habitat. As a result, pesticide labels and regulations may include use restrictions, buffer zones, or other mitigation measures designed to reduce potential impacts on protected species and habitats.

Advanced Checking is a comprehensive recommendation writing service designed for the US market in regions where regulatory requirements are most complex. It's built for organizations that want to reduce operational risk and regulatory complexity by delivering the confidence required for complex advanced agronomic decision-making.
The API validates against crop input label requirements, along with additional federal and state regulations, such as Pesticide Use Limitation Areas (PULAs) and applicable Endangered Species Act (ESA) mitigation requirements. The service performs product, tank mix, and historical application checking at the field level, ensuring accurate and compliant recommendations.
