About Compass Regulatory

Compass Regulatory simplifies regulatory work for leading agriculture companies, helping them bring new products to the farmers who need them. We tackle regulatory challenges in a unique way, leveraging a modern software platform that increases automation, security, and organization of regulatory work—supported by a team of deep regulatory experts who help our customers navigate a complex, evolving landscape. We then make that critical data available to product users across the industry, from retailers to farm technology providers.

A nimble, quickly-growing startup based in the Bay Area, Compass is backed by top-tier investors including Battery Ventures, Inspired Capital, Bessemer Venture Partners, Cavallo Ventures (Wilbur-Ellis), Fika Ventures, and Twine Ventures.

The Role

We are looking for a Senior Full-Stack Engineer to join our small but mighty engineering team. This is a core application development role: you will work across the entire stack—data modeling and migrations, back-end services, and polished front-end interfaces—to build the software platform that powers our customers’ regulatory workflows.

You will collaborate directly with stakeholders and regulatory domain experts to define requirements, then turn around and ship working software—often. You will own features end-to-end, from schema design through deployment, and take responsibility for the quality and reliability of what you build. You will run your own deployments, monitor production, and iterate quickly based on what you learn.

As a senior member of a small team, you will also mentor other engineers, advocate for strong engineering practices, and help raise the bar across the codebase. We are looking for someone with a high level of agency—someone who takes initiative, thinks critically about trade-offs, and drives work forward without waiting to be told what to do.

We care about building the right technology for our customers and building the technology right. If you love writing well-tested code, embrace AI as a tool in your development workflow, and are genuinely excited to learn a new domain and build tools that matter for agriculture, we want to hear from you.

What You’ll Do

  • Build features across the full stack—from database schema design and migrations, to API development, to polished, performant front-end experiences that users love.
  • Implement AI capabilities into the core application. Going beyond simple chatbots, we’re building the platform for AI agents to get regulatory work done in collaboration with reg. teams. You’ll be instrumental in building agentic UX flows into the Compass applications.
  • Collaborate directly with product, regulatory, and customer-facing teams to understand requirements, shape solutions, and deliver software that solves real problems.
  • Design and evolve data models, service boundaries, and system architecture, making deliberate choices that support the platform’s growth over time.
  • Ship often. Take features from concept to production on a regular cadence, owning the full lifecycle including deployment, monitoring, and iteration.
  • Run deployments and manage production infrastructure, ensuring the platform is reliable and performant for our customers.
  • Write clear, well-tested code. Champion testing practices—particularly integration tests—that keep the codebase healthy and give the team confidence to move fast.
  • Mentor and support other engineers on the team, through code review, pairing, and helping establish patterns and practices that scale.
  • Evaluate and introduce new patterns, libraries, or infrastructure improvements that raise the bar for the engineering team.
  • Embed with our regulatory domain experts to develop a working knowledge of the workflows, document types, and compliance requirements that define our customers’ day-to-day work.
  • Embrace AI-assisted development tools in your own workflow, and help the team build a culture of thoughtful AI adoption across the software development lifecycle.

What You Bring

  • 6–10+ years of professional experience as a full-stack engineer, with demonstrated ownership of system design and architectural decisions at production scale.
  • Strong experience with our stack or closely related technologies: Python & Django, PostgreSQL, HTMX, Alpine.js, and TailwindCSS.
  • Deep comfort with data modeling, migrations, and relational database design—you think carefully about schemas and understand the downstream implications of data decisions.
  • A track record of building front-end interfaces that are not just functional but genuinely well-crafted—you care about user experience and sweat the details.
  • Proficiency with cloud infrastructure and DevOps tooling: AWS, Terraform, Docker, CI/CD pipelines, and observability tools (logging, monitoring, alerting).
  • Solid understanding of the full web development lifecycle, from schema design through deployment and production support.
  • A strong testing discipline—you write tests because you believe in them, not because someone told you to.
  • Comfort working in a small-team, startup environment where you will wear multiple hats and operate with significant autonomy.
  • Excellent communication skills: you can explain technical decisions to non-technical collaborators and work effectively across functions.
  • Enthusiasm for using AI tools (copilots, code generation, automated testing) as part of your development workflow.

Nice to Have

  • Experience building software for regulatory, compliance, legal, or other document-intensive workflow applications.
  • Interest in agriculture, food systems, or regulated industries.
  • Experience building and scaling products at an early-stage startup.
  • Enthusiasm for working with frontier AI tooling to accelerate development—and a habit of staying current as the landscape evolves.

What We Offer

  • A chance to use your technical skills to improve our food and agriculture system—work that matters.
  • Deep product ownership: you will shape architecture, not just execute on it.
  • A scrappy, talented team that ships fast and learns from each other and our customers.
  • Competitive salary, meaningful equity, and full benefits including healthcare + FSA, 401(k), and flexible time off.
